Western Australia is the country’s largest state. It is an immense and diverse region with spectacular coastlines and an equally amazing interior. Here are a few destination ideas for your car rental from Perth Airport:

  • For a beautiful beach not far from the city, head out to Cottesloe which is only half an hour’s drive from the airport. The golden sands on the edge of the Indian Ocean are backed by restaurants, cafes and other urban entertainment.
  • The state’s south coast is known as the Rainbow Coast and is a beautiful area of ancient forests, pristine sands and outdoor activities galore. Greens Pool, a natural lagoon, is a highlight and perfect for swimming.
  • Shark Bay north of Perth is a World Heritage Site, named as such for its diverse flora and fauna. There is a Discovery Centre where you can learn a little more, and there are also opportunities in the area for boating, hiking and wildlife viewing.
  • The Golden Outback, directly inland from Perth, is a fascinating and other-worldly landscape. Head to Kalgoorlie and the goldfields region to add a little gold rush history to your outback escape.
  • In it for the long haul? Follow the coast north to Darwin and experience the extent of Australia’s wide open spaces.

Driving Guide

Perth’s road network reflects its sprawling coastline of perfect beaches and a laid-back vibe. There’s no toll roads, a singular giant motorway stretching north to south and a web of suburban streets connected by more roundabouts than traffic lights. The CBD is perched on the edge of the Swan River with the Narrows Bridge linking locals to the picturesque South Perth foreshore.
Scenic and picturesque, once you pick up your Airport Rentals car hire you will quickly realise that driving around Perth is the best way to travel. Even if you’re on a short business trip, try and find time to hit one of the three freeways or nine metropolitan highways and take in your surrounds. A fascinating Celtic history, gold rushes and mining booms all contribute to the fascinating fabric of Perth.

Around two million people now live in Perth, with that number growing by the year. Located on the Swan coastal plain, it is regularly voted one of the top 10 ‘most liveable’ cities on the planet. The main street of business is St Georges Terrace, while the pedestrianized Hay and Murray Streets are blessed with many retail and entertainment hotspots.

Driving from Perth Airport to the CBD

Perth is yet to build the planned rail connection from the city to the airport. But while rush hours in the morning and early evening are predictably busy in Perth, this Western Australian city is much less busier than the likes of Melbourne or Sydney. But the distance from Perth Airport to the CBD in your car rental will depend on where you’ve come from. In a somewhat unusual layout, Perth International and Domestic Terminals (T1 & T2) is located separately from the two other domestic terminals (T3 & T4) – there’s a distance of 11km, connected by Dunreath Drive. Those travelling domestically are just 12km (7.5 miles) from the CBD; international travellers will have to drive an additional 5km.
The route from Perth Airport to the CBD is relatively straightforward. Just take Brearley Ave to National Highway 94 (Great Eastern Highway) in Redcliffe. Follow this for just under 13km, then loop around onto Graham Farmer Freeway (affectionately know as the ‘Polly Pipe’ to sand-gropers – Polly being the nickname of Graham Framer, a famous AFL footballer). You will bypass Belmont Park and the racecourse, before crossing the Swan River and into the heartbeat of Perth.

A city developing all the time

The Perth CBD is currently under construction – a skyline dotted with almost more cranes than skyscrapers – and this urban development can pose a few traffic hassles. The development of Elizabeth Quay (due for completion at the end of 2015) has seen the diversion of traffic around Riverside Drive, a picturesque east-to-west arterial road through the city. Early morning and late afternoon can be exceptionally busy, not only in the city but also on the Freeway – the Mitchell Freeway takes you north of the CBD, the Kwinana Freeway south.
The structure of the CBD itself is, like many other Australian cities, grid-like. The central corridor of St Georges Terrace is the main car-friendly route, Hay and Murray Streets run parallel, however parts of both give way to pedestrian malls. Perth Train Station separates the CBD from Northbridge, another exciting cultural precinct.

An Insider’s Guide to Perth driving

The drivers of Perth have been labelled (by others and themselves!) as the worst in Australia. This is predominantly due to their lack of using indicators and inability to merge – the city Freeway exits at 5pm on a weekday are prime evidence of this. The laid-back nature of Perth is reflected in its driving habits; you’ll find more roundabouts in the suburbs than traffic lights and don’t be surprised if other cars don’t travel at the speed limit.
A few tips:
  • Some suburban highways (Canning, Stirling, etc) are two lanes only and are major bus routes; be aware that travelling in the left lane may mean frequent stopping as buses have right of way. Don’t mess with the Transport bus drivers!
  • Road rules are pretty standard with no hook turns or strange give way rules, but always remember to give way to the right at the many roundabouts.
  • Freeway speed limits range from 80kph to 100kph, with 50kph the general limit in Perth city centre.

If you need to drive into the CBD, your best bet is to park in a multi-storey as street parking is scarce and many spaces become clearways at peak times – leave your car in a clearway and risk a parking fine upwards of $150!

Car Parking at Perth Airport

There are a number of options: Long Term, Short Term, FASTtrack, Park & Wait and Regional Terminals Parking. Booking online in advance is always a good idea as you can save money. If you’re in long term, one day’s parking will set you back $23. Two days is $46, three days $67, with $11 for the days after that.

Parking in Perth CBD

City of Perth parking is the main operator, with numerous multi-storey and covered options. These include Aberdeen Garage, Citiplace, Council House, Elder St, Mayfair St, Regal Place and Roe St. The main suburbs are CBD, East Perth, River Foreshore, Northbridge, West Perth and West Leederville. Fees for City of Perth parking vary across the region. For example, Aberdeen will cost you a Monday-Sunday hourly rate of $3.10, while it’s $3.90 at Citiplace. Most expensive is the largest car park in the city, at the Convention Centre - $5.50 an hour, with specials for weekends and ‘Early Bird’.

Metered street parking is currently at $3.60 an hour, while Wilson Parking is also highly regarded by locals for its cheaper rates. On the corner of Pier and Wellington Streets you can land an hourly rate of just $3.

Spending time in Fremantle

Around 30 minutes’ south-west of Perth is the popular port city of Fremantle. Both locals and tourists flock here for the ‘Cappuccino Strip’, tram rides, gorgeous coastal food, micro-breweries and so much more. When parking your Perth car rental, there are short- medium- and long-term options. Queensgate Car Park has 850 spots, with free deals on Monday and Tuesday. Check online at for more information.

Fuel prices can vary from place to place in Australia, depending on the day. However, don’t forget to top up the tank in your rental car before you take it back to the depot. As a general rule, cheap fuel is found at the extremities of Perth – road trains (extra large freight trucks) frequent these petrol stations on their way north, south or east, hence bringing down the price.

Petrol stations near the airport

Great Eastern Highway is dotted with them: A Caltex Woolsworths Riverdale and Caltex Australia Limited and two BP stations. Between Roe Highway and Orrong Road is another hot-spot. You will find seven or eight stations in a small area. Further south, Albany Highway and Shepperton Road also offer a selection of stations.

Keep your shopping dockets if you shop at Coles and get 4c or more off a litre – the same goes for having a Woolworths Everyday Rewards loyalty card.

The cheapest day to fill up is generally a Tuesday or Wednesday, with prices peaking on the weekend. Most petrol stations follow this pattern. If you’re keen to find the cheapest fuel near you, check out the, which will give you petrol prices by suburb for today and tomorrow - how’s that for planning?

As of December 2014, the cost of fuel is the cheapest it’s been for a long time, with the average price being around $121.0 cents per litre.
